Name numerology: letter chart and a step-by-step example
By CosmoHora · Updated
Pythagorean name numerology assigns values from 1 to 9 to letters. Expression uses every letter, soul urge uses vowels, and personality uses consonants. CosmoHora removes accents and preserves 11, 22 and 33 when reducing these totals.
The letter chart used by CosmoHora
The groups are: 1 = A, J, S; 2 = B, K, T; 3 = C, L, U; 4 = D, M, V; 5 = E, N, W; 6 = F, O, X; 7 = G, P, Y; 8 = H, Q, Z; 9 = I, R. Look up each letter rather than assigning a single value to an entire name.
This method converts letters to uppercase and removes accents before adding values. Spaces, hyphens and other punctuation have no value. For example, Á is treated as A. These rules make the result reproducible, but not every numerological tradition uses the same convention.
A worked example using the fictional name ANA
A is 1, N is 5 and A is 1. Add all the letters: 1 + 5 + 1 = 7. The expression number in this example is 7. No further reduction is needed because the total is already between 1 and 9.
For soul urge, add only the vowels: A + A = 1 + 1 = 2. For personality, add only consonants: N = 5. The three results differ because the calculations use different inputs, not because one is incorrect. ANA is a teaching example rather than a person assessed by the site.
How master numbers are handled
If a total reaches 11, 22 or 33, CosmoHora's reduction function preserves that value for expression, soul urge and personality. A calculator that always reduces to one digit may instead show 2, 4 or 6. Check the convention before comparing results.
A master number does not establish personal superiority or guarantee talent. It is a category within the numerological tradition. The method should be explained alongside its symbolism, particularly when alternative names or conventions produce different totals.
Full names, nicknames and the letter Y
When studying a full name, choose the name you want to examine and state that choice. A shorter nickname can produce a different total. The calculator does not establish which version defines your identity; it applies its rule to the text supplied.
CosmoHora treats Y as a vowel in the soul urge calculation and excludes it from consonant totals. Other schools classify Y according to pronunciation. This matters for many English names and needs to be disclosed so that readers can reproduce the arithmetic.
Checking the result privately
You can reproduce the calculation on paper and compare the three totals. You do not need to publish a full name or personal reading to verify the arithmetic. The tool calculates in your browser; saving a chart or creating an account is a separate action.
Number descriptions are symbolic interpretations. Do not use a letter total to assess professional competence, actual relationship compatibility or someone's worth. Compare the life path guide, which uses a full birth date, and the personal year guide, which uses birth day, month and the year under study.
